Species
Dinosaurs consisted of a varied group .
More than 500 seperate groups and more than 1,000 different species of dinosaur fossils , skeletons and remains have been found on every continent of Earth.
Some were herbivorous plant eaters and others were carnivorous meat eaters. Often species walked on 4 legs or 2 legs or shifted between the two . . Many breeds developed elaborate skeletal modifications like horns or crests. Not all were large and many were human-sized or smaller. Most major groups of dinosaurs are known to have built nests and laid eggs making them like modern birds.
The term “dinosaur” termed in 1842 by R . Owen is Greek and means a “terrible, powerful, wondrous lizard”. Recent research has shown them to be sociable , adaptable and with elevated metabolisms and good interactive skills This contradicts the term in common usuage in the English language of “dinosaur” being used to describe anything large, slow, outmoded, or bound for extinction.
